I Can Animate has established itself as the stop frame animation tool of choice for budding amateurs. It is used by animators and educators worldwide, and has won the Education Resources Award for 'Best Primary ICT Software'.
The software supports stop frame, time lapse and mouse-drawn animation. A 'green screen' effect can also be employed so that different images can be substituted as backgrounds (a feature usually found only in higher-end animation products). The system requirements for the program are very basic and a range of recording devices can be used from camcorders to webcams.
The interface is very simple and even complete novices have been known to produce a short animation using a combination of the methods mentioned above in under an hour. Animations are exportable into QuickTime for easy viewing and can be added to photographs or existing digital video footage to brighten it up. Files can also be exported to iMovie for further editing, for example to stitch together all the animations of a class into one film for a plenary reviewing activity.
A drawback is that mouse drawn animations can look quite amateur, depending on the skill level, but when it comes to 'claymation' and time lapse recording some fantastic outcomes are possible.
With its blend of simplicity and features, I Can Animate is a fantastic way of introducing pupils to the world of animation and presents a fun way of teaching and learning.
