14-19 Diploma (5) Creative and Media Diploma (4) City Learning Centre (1)

Rawmarsh CLC - One To Watch...

Set up as part of the ‘Excellence in Cities’ initiative, the Rawmarsh CLC provides state of the art technology and courses for people looking to learn the basics or gain accredited qualifications. They also run after school clubs, teaching game design, 3D computer animation and radio broadcasting. Students can even get involved in their very own rock band and a special ‘Computers for Girls’ club (woo!). When we got a firsthand look at some of the work the students were doing, I must admit I was really impressed (if a little bit envious of the fun things they get to do!)

Rawmarsh is adding to its already outstanding facilities. We’re currently working with Trish Sharp, the centre’s Development Manager, planning the addition of a brand new building designed around the courses that will be taught there. Having seen the plans, I can divulge that the building itself looks pretty striking (even before you consider the amount of technology that will be in there for the students to use).

Boasting fully-kitted audio and television editing suites, a large studio for filming and green screening, a fold away ICT suite (which will also double up as a ‘mess’ room for making props and costumes) and a fully operational 3D and game design suite, the new building will be used mainly for delivering the 14-19 Creative and Media Diploma.

The diploma is due to be launched this September, with a lot in store for the students (and, I imagine, the staff!). They will be producing a Greek Tragedy and all the students will be able to sign themselves up to work in different aspects of the production that interest them, from acting and script writing to filming and marketing. The second year of the diploma will also bring new challenges, with the annual tradition of the Roscars (Rotherham’s answer to the Hollywood awards ceremony) being left completely in the hands of the students. Every aspect of the evening will be arranged by them: booking the venue, sending out invites, producing tickets, managing PR and even the night itself. These are the kinds of skills that students might need in future jobs, so having the chance to help design and build sets, arrange lighting and record the show is a great opportunity!

We’re really excited to see how all the changes and additions to Rawmarsh will affect its students and the work they produce. On a more personal note though, I’m still angling for my invite to the Roscars!
