Bringing Humanities Lessons To Life - Geography

Geography

Photography
Photography is a useful way of getting students to look closely at their surroundings.  It is a useful skill that students can get started on with the minimum of help. Photography inherently lends itself to display work, giving students something to be proud of.  Digital photographs can form part of magazines or posters, be annotated upon or even uploaded to the Internet to form part of a website.
Applying what you have learned to a familiar environment can really reinforce information.  Having learned about aspects of geography such as congestion, flooding and industry, students can be sent out in groups with cameras to find evidence of the effects of these phenomena in their own town and how they are being dealt with, e.g congestion might result in a one way system, park and ride or car parking bans. The resultant images can be used as the basis of posters about each issue.

Animation
Animation helps to develop teamwork, planning, organisation and patience! Animations are often funny and memorable. Students watching completed animations often can’t believe that they have made that themselves; having final product like this to be proud of can really boost motivation. Finished animations can be posted up on the internet where parents and peers can view them and students can use them as revision materials. Several geography topics lend themselves to stop motion animation including:
•The formation and eruption of volcanoes
• Movement of tectonic plates
• Contaminants in the food chain
• Erosion
• The production of coffee
