Building Skills for the Future

Creativity is a great buzzword at the moment – everyone wants children to be more creative, but what does that mean? Why is everyone so bothered? What has technology got to do with it?

Primary

  • We spend so much of our time advising teachers about how to get their students engaged that occasionally we commandeer a class for the day and have a crack at teaching them. So, we spent the day with a Year 6 class at Parish Church Primary School in Gainsborough. This time, we had a go at teaching with PCs with the help of Reason expert, Joe Moretti.
  • Here's a selection of our favourite podcasts made by Year Six when we visited Parish Church Primary for the day to explore Space!
  • Education Journalist, Jo Eden, runs through her top four animation projects.

  • With stereoscopic 3D becoming more familiar in our cinemas, FujiFilm haven’t wasted any time in bringing their new 3D digital camera to the market. We got our hands on the FinePix W1 and put this first-of-a-kind through its paces.
  • Tom Hughes is the video journalist for Seven TV, the longest running community TV channel in the UK. Seven broadcasts to over 140,000 homes on the Virgin Media network in North and North East Lincolnshire. Here, Tom gives us a little insight into life in the broadcast industry…

Further Education

  • Learning is no longer restricted to the classroom, lecture theatre or seminar room – we’ve gone mobile, sharing resources across the world. With the popularity of mobile devices like the iPod touch and iPhone, students can learn on the go by downloading study materials and referring to them whenever they want. iTunes U is one of the largest collections of free educational audio and video files on the web, with over 200,000 already available to students, teachers and anyone who wants to learn.
  • In 1983, an elderly man walked into the screen while watching ‘Jaws 3-D’ at the cinema. He claimed he couldn’t tell the difference between the auditorium and the open seas. Fair enough, but surely the 10ft face of Dennis Quaid should have tipped him off?
  • We talked to roving creative, Julian James, to find out what life is like for a freelancer.

14-19 Diploma

  • Creativity is a great buzzword at the moment – everyone wants children to be more creative, but what does that mean? Why is everyone so bothered? What has technology got to do with it?
  • To prove how simple stereoscopic moviemaking can be, we selected a handful of unsuspecting workers from our Marketing team and set them the challenge of creating their own stereoscopic 3D movie. Here, we give you a step-by-step guide on how they did it.
  • We visited Rawmarsh City Learning Centre earlier this year and asked Luke and Liam, a couple of its budding 3D animators, what they think of Maya.
