Macs & PCs in the Mix in Schools

It’s no secret that today’s young people are more computer-literate than ever before; when they’re not surfing the web on their own laptops or smartphones, they’re getting to grips with new software in a fraction of the time it takes some adults (although we hate to admit it). As everything seems to have gone digital, it’s even more important to get creative technology into the classroom to hold their attention and keep up with the technological Joneses.

Primary

  • We love videomaking. Not only is it an easy way of engaging students with topics, it’s also a fantastic way of getting them to develop transferable skills, such as communication, teamwork and organisation. Here, we give you a step-by-step guide to Apple's iMovie.
  • We spend a lot of time advising teachers about how to get their students engaged. Recently, we spent the day with a Year 6 class at Parish Church Primary School in Gainsborough. This time, we had a go at teaching with PCs with the help of Reason expert, Joe Moretti.
  • Here's a selection of our favourite podcasts made by Year Six when we visited Parish Church Primary for the day to explore Space!

Secondary

  • It’s no secret that today’s young people are more computer-literate than ever before. As everything seems to have gone digital, it’s even more important to get creative technology into the classroom to hold their attention and keep up with the technological Joneses. Here, we take a look at the benefits of integrating Macs and PCs in your school.
  • Let’s be honest about it: virtualisation is not an easy topic to get to grips with – especially when all you hear about is the string of problems you will supposedly have by going virtual. So in the spirit of fairness, I give you 10 myths of virtualisation technology* (and my verdict on which ones are even remotely true).
  • Here at Jigsaw, we’re always tweeting about what we get up to in the world of creative technology. When Tom Mumford, co-founder of video production company BoxFly Media and freelance video cameraman, started following us on Twitter, we soon discovered that he had lots to say too. Always on the look-out for people to interview about the creative industries, it wasn’t long before we’d nabbed him for a chat!

Further Education

  • When it comes to CAD and 3D modelling there seem to be a never-ending supply of different applications out there, each trying to make teachers’ and students’ lives that much easier. While they all have their benefits, Elliott Smith (friendly 3D consultant) decided to put together a simple guide to help you choose between them.
  • Digital advertising is big business, and now more designers than ever are rolling up their sleeves and adding more skills to their creative repertoire. So, we decided to ask Paul Hasted, director of UK-based design company, Gooii, what he thinks you need to get into the world of website programming and design…
  • It’s not just cinema moguls that are feeling the benefits of stereoscopic moviemaking; it is also a great way to make sure your students remember just about any subject. With the right equipment and a bit of guidance from us, anyone can get started with 3D.

14-19 Diploma

  • Creativity is a great buzzword at the moment – everyone wants children to be more creative, but what does that mean? Why is everyone so bothered? What has technology got to do with it?
  • We visited Rawmarsh City Learning Centre earlier this year and asked Luke and Liam, a couple of its budding 3D animators, what they think of Maya.
  • We recently got talking to one of our audio consultants Alex Judd (alias DJ Soul Intent).
